Multiphysics numerical modeling of superconducting coils for different large scale applications, using in-house software.
Abstract:
Superconducting coils can be used in different applications like high field magnets, space propulsion, and hybrid electric aircraft, due to their high power density and ability to generate high magnetic fields with minimal power losses. However, due to their non-linear behavior, it is highly complicated to model their coupled multiphysics behavior (electromagnetic + thermal + mechanical) using commercial software. We have developed our own software at IEE-SAS that can numerically model the superconducting coils in such full scale magnet systems in an accurate and fast way using our original methods. The software is highly applicable to non-linear transient cases like multiphysics quench in HTS coils in these magnets. Our work comes under various EU horizon 2020 projects, and can be used by researchers for magnet design in many large scale applications.
