Annotation:	The studies will be performed on the physical properties of thin films of superconductors and ferromagnets, as well as the heterostructures build of nanometer-thin layers, which may be useful in construction of modern electronic devices. The films will be grown using pulsed laser deposition or magnetron sputtering; the physical properties will be assessed using structural, magneto-optical, transport and microwave measurement methods. We will evaluate how these properties are affected by such factors as the presence of SrRuO3 thin films with perpendicular magnetization as well as electron irradiation.

Annotation:	Sustainability of energy systems goes through high penetration of renewable energy with huge volumes of electricity to transmit over long distances. The most advanced solution is the HVDC Supergrid. But fault currents remain an issue even if DC circuit breakers have emerged. These are not satisfying, whereas Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SCFCLs) using REBCO tapes bring an attractive solution. SCFCLs have already proved their outstanding performances in MVAC systems, with a few commercial devices in service. However, present REBCO conductors cannot be readily used at very high voltages: the electrical field under current limitation is too low and leads to too long tapes and high cost. FASTGRID aims to improve and modify the REBCO conductor, in particular its shunt, in order to significantly enhance (2 to 3 times) the electric field and so the economical SCFCL attractiveness. A commercial tape will be upgraded to reach a higher critical current and enhanced homogeneity as compared to today’s standards. For safer and better operation, the tape’s normal zone propagation velocity will be increased by at least a factor of 10 using the patented current flow diverter concept. The shunt surface will also be functionalized to boost the thermal exchanges with coolant. This advanced conductor will be used in a smart DC SCFCL module (1 kA, 50 kV). This one will include new functionalities and will be designed as sub-element of a real VDC device. In parallel to this main line of work, developments will be carried out on a promising breakthrough path: ultra high electric field tapes based on sapphire substrates. FASTGRID will bring this to the next levels of technology readiness. In conclusion, FASTGRID project aims at improving significantly existing REBCO conductor architecture to make SCFCLs economically attractive for HVDC Supergrids. However, availability of such an advanced conductor will have an impact on virtually all other applications of HTS tapes.

TRANSCOE – Development of new designed transparent conductive electrodes for organic electronics

Annotation:	Subject of the proposed project is preparation of new transparent conductive electrodes with high transparency and low sheet resistance for organic photovoltaic\’s (OPVs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The project will focus on five issues; i) electrode design ii) synthesis of conductive electrodes; iii) fabrication, characterization and optimization of transparent electrodes; iv) fabrication and characterization of OPVs and OLEDs to test the performance of the prepared transparent conductive electrodes; v) encapsulation. We will prepare OPVs and OLEDs with incorporated novel electrode design and test the performances of the devices when the electrode materials will be deposited on glass and/or flexible substrate. Transparent conductive electrodes will be based either on organic Ag-nanowire network -organic multilayered structure or on atomic layer deposited Al-doped ZnO films. The electrodes will be characterized and optimized by measuring the sheet resistance and light transmission. The sheet resistance of the electrode should be adjusted to below 12 Ω and 50 Ω sq−1 for organic and Al-doped ZnO films transparent electrodes, respectively. Finally, OPVs and OLEDs will be encapsulated using atomic layer deposited thin films and their performance will be examined. Proposed project includes two different approaches of transparent conducting electrodes preparation for OPVs and PLEDs. Evaluation of performance of these two types of electrodes presents important and unique output of the project. As a result of the project A step to commercialization of new transparent conductive electrodes, OPVs and OLEDs will be achieved through international collaboration. Funding of the proposed project will create seed for setting up a new research on flexible electronics, Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs), Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs), and nanotechnology applications in electronic and photonics for both partners.

Annotation:	Recently, great research effort has been devoted to ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors for the preparation ofhigh-performance electronic devices operating in the electric fields up to tens of kV and UV photodetectors. Thisproject aims the research of the growth of epitaxial layers and electronic as well as optoelectronic devices basedon Ga2O3. Based on preliminary results, we will investigate the growth of rhombohedral Ga2O3 with the highestbandgap energy. Epitaxial layers will be prepared by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition using liquid phaseprecursor injection. The layers will be used for preparation and research of electronic devices with a focus onSchottky diodes and switching MOSFET transistors. We will study the transport and thermal properties, parasiticeffects and breakdown mechanisms of the developed electronic devices as well as electro-optical properties ofp-n heterojunctions. We will also target exploratory research for improvements in thermal management of thepower transistors.

Annotation:	Thanks to the unusual physical properties, 2D materials have been intensively studied for several years. Aninteresting group of this class of materials is transition metal dichalcogenides TMD. They have a hexagonalstructure with the individual layers bonded to each other only by weak Van der Waals bonds. This causessignificantly anisotropic properties and has a significant effect on their electronic structure. Some of them showphysically interesting correlated states (superconductivity, charge density waves). The primary goal of this projectis to prepare and study the properties of thin layers of 2 different TMD – MoS2 and PtSe2, and to study theinfluence of doping with Li and Na cations on the electrical and structural properties of these layers. Thesecondary goal is to optimize growth and doping conditions to improve the parameters of thin films, such aselectrical conductivity and charge carrier mobility which will enable the preparation of functional electroniccomponents – transistors.

Annotation:	In this project, we will focus on the theoretical and experimental investigation of magnetic vortices. The idea is touse them as a candidate for an information carrier in ultrafast and energy-efficient devices. The key idea of suchmemory is to use the two vortex core polarities as a magnetic bit that can be easily read and written via thedynamical reversal. We will search for the optimal shape of a magnetic 3D pattern with polarity easily controlledby a small in-plane magnetic field. In the second part of the project, we will design and prepare a system ofordered magnetic nanoelements in the vortex state set by an in-plane magnetic field. Such ordered nanoelementscan be considered as a single unit cell of the magnonic crystal. They can be also periodically arranged into afinite 2D array of interacting magnetic objects to observe the unidirectional spin waves. Therefore, ourinvestigation will be an important step towards the first experimental demonstration of topological magnons.

Annotation:	Additional thermal stabilization is necessary for commercially available high-temperature superconducting tapes,in order to use the tapes in devices for fault current limiting in high-voltage grids. The proposed project is aimed atfabrication of thermally stabilizing composite coating (epoxy resin with ceramic filler), which will act as a sink andabsorber of the heat produced in a limiting event. Various materials for thermal stabilization will be tested, withregard to their thermal, physical, and mechanical properties, and their resistance against thermal shocks.Possibilities for improvement of mechanical properties will be investigated by additional reinforcement of thethermal stabilization. The effectivity of the thermal stabilization will be determined for superconducting tapes fromvarious producers, by experimental limiting of fault current. Experiments will be complemented with numericalmodelling.

Annotation:	Intensive research has so far been done into metallic contacts to semiconductors. However, new types ofconductivity, materials and devices, and new contact formation mechanisms require new insights into theformation of such contacts. Our aim is to determine the processes and physics behind metallization schemes fornormally-off InAlN-based heterostructure high electron mobility transistors with hole conductivity. InAlN with ahigh molar fraction of InN will be doped with Mg, and the ohmic and Schottky metallic stacks will be optimized. New transition metal dichalkogenide materials (TMDCs) are very promising for new device applications. However,metallization schemes for TMDCs are very challenging. TMDCs exhibit varying band gap widths in dependenceof their thickness. Our aim is to study metallization schemes for TMDCs, their topology, and explain differences between ex-foliated and grown samples, and differences between back-gated and top-gated devices in correlation with basic TMDCs properties.

Annotation:	Aim of the project is to elaborate the design of a superconducting CORC-like cable with considerably reduced AClosses. Project is focused on identification of the key parameters of the cable design, on the construction of modelcables and their experimental characterisation. The research will follow two basic directions: optimisation ofgeometrical layout of the individual REBCO tapes in the cable and investigation of possible utilisation of lowconductivity materials for the central core of the cable. Geometrical optimisation of the cable will be based onresults of numerical simulations employing the Finite Element Method and the Minimum Electro-Magnetic EntropyProduction method. In the experimental part, sets of short model cables will be manufactured for tests of differentgeometrical configurations and different materials for the central core. Investigated will be the total AC losses,basic transport parameters and degradation of superconducting tapes due to mechanical loading in the cablingprocess.

Annotation:	Recently, detectors of ionizing radiation are important part of many fields of science and research. The object of proposal is research of various semiconductor detector structures based on Si, GaAs, 4H-SiC and CdTe as a detector of ionizing radiation where 4H-SiC is wide bandgap semiconductor which is radiation resistant material suitable for long term work in harsh environment. This includes optimization of prepared sensor in term of utilization and also what type of radiation will be detected. Also passivation and encapsulation is important in long term word of prepared sensors. The contribution will be also in the simulation due to optimization of size and thickness of sensor contacts and passivation. The prepared structures will be characterized by electrical (curren-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurements) and spectrometric measurements using standartly used radioisotope sources. Also radiation hardness of samples will be tested (increased temperature, ionizing environment).

High-performance curved X-ray optics prepared by advanced nanomachining technology

Annotation:	The project is focused on the research and development of new types of X-ray optics with highly accurate curvedactive surfaces. The surfaces will be prepared by an innovative nanomachining technology. We will investigatethe application of nanomachining technology to a special case of X-ray optics with curved surfaces, which is aparabolic refractive lens operating in the transmission geometry. The second special case we will focus on will bethin crystal monochromators with different thicknesses in a range of 20-2000 micrometers. Such elements can beused for example as beam splitters in modern X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL), bent crystals in Johanssonmonochromators for spectroscopic applications, or they can also be used in particle accelerators for beamsteering. The developed elements of curved X-ray optics will be tested in real X-ray metrology and X-ray imagingexperiments using laboratory or synchrotron X-ray sources and highly sensitive directly converting X-raydetectors Pilatus and Medipix.

Annotation:	The discovery of graphene in 2004 has brought a massive interest of scientists active in condensed-matter physicson research of 2D materials. Even though these materials have a long history starting already in the twenties of the20th century, the past years have seen an intensive renascence of interest in 2D materials. Ultra-thin samples ofmany 2D materials have been successfully prepared with electronic properties that may exhibit correlatedelectronic phenomena such as charge density waves and superconductivity. One of the well-studied families of the2D materials are transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). TMDs consist of hexagonal layers of metal atomssandwiched between two layers of chalcogen atoms with a MX2 stoichiometry.In this project, we focus on those materials from the TMD family that exhibit strongly correlated electronic states:NbSe2, TiSe2, TaS2, TaSe2 and PtSe2. The goal of the project is to prepare ultrathin (≤ 10 nm) layers and bulksamples and characterise them thoroughly in terms of the thickness, crystallinity, homogeneity, optical andelectronic properties. A special attention will be paid to charge density wave states and superconductivity in thesematerials and how they evolve with the sample thickness, doping, external electric and magnetic fields and detailsof the growth process.The scientific program also aims at preparing heterostructures built up of these materials as well as hybrid systemscombining TMDs with other materials. This research also includes a detailed characterisation of heterostructures toprovide a feedback to optimise the growth process.

Annotation:	Full superconducting electric motors are very promising to provide therequired power density to enablecommercial hybrid and electric airplanes. These can reduce emissions by75 % in CO2 and 90 % in NOx, followingthe ACARE Flightpath 2050 targets of the European Union. Superconductingmotors can also be applied to cleanersea or sweet water transport. In spite of the extensive research in thearea, the electro-magnetic and electro-thermal properties of superconducting coils in the motor magneticenvironment remain largely unknown, partiallybecause of the lack of measurements of the relevant temperatures(between 20-40 K) and modeling methods forfull superconducting motors.The aim of this project is to gain this understanding and develop numerical modeling methods to enable the design of future superconducting motors. These methods will be compared to experiments in the relevant temperature range for motor applications.

Annotation:	Owing the ever growing demand for the energy volume, energy attainability represents one of the most important issues of today’s society. However, there are great reserves in the energy savings available. According to available analyses, more than 10% of all electricity is ultimately lost in the form of conversion losses. Clearly, even partial improvement in the conversion efficiency can have strong economic impact. As the most of energy is now used for the electronics, corresponding scale of the losses forms at the end-user side, where the electricity is converted into a form suitable for a particular appliance. The main effort towards the conversion efficiency improvements therefore targets the area of power AC/DC and DC/DC converters for consumer and industrial electronics. Significant improvement in the conversion efficiency can be achieved by using GaN based transistors, as they are capable to operate at much higher frequencies with almost three times lower switching losses compared to Si devices.The main goal of the project is the research and development of vertical GaN MOSFET without using p-doping, and gaining the original knowledge on electrical and physical properties of the developed devices. From the quantitative point of view, our proof-of-concept device will target RON<2 mOhm/cm2 and VBD>600 V. An original feature of the proposed concept is utilization of the semi-insulating (SI) GaN as a channel layer (instead of p-type GaN), which blocks the current flow through the transistor at zero gate voltage. To open the transistor channel, positive voltage applied to the gate will be needed to induce down bend-bending in the SI GaN, allowing electron injection from the source to the drift region (along the side walls of SI GaN). This concept therefore represents a unipolar enhancement-mode transistor, while drift region is formed of un-doped GaN with extremely low density of dislocation grown directly on GaN substrate.

Annotation:	The subject of micro-magnetism studies are phenomena which are possible to describe on classicallevel of the theory. Micromagnetism describes processes in devices like bit-patterned media in harddisks,magnetic memories, magnetic radio-waves detectors, or bio and medical applications. Typicaldimensions of the devices active parts are order from micro-meter to few nanometers. Typical operationtemperature is room temperature. Usual model for these condition is classical physics. The mainproblem of the magnetic state stability simulation is the time-scale on which the magnetic statetypically persist. The magnetic state in memories is stable for years. There are several effectivealgorithms for finding lowest energy paths among metastable states. In order to search for stablemagnetic states effectively, we decided to implement matadynamics algoritm into micro-magneticsolvers.

Annotation:	We prepare different types of perovskite films -ferromagnetic, superconducting, dielectric- (thickness up to 100nm) and micro- and nano structures. YBa2Cu3Ox superconducting microstrips will be irradiated by electrons (30keV) with the aim to create channels for easy vortex motion. We also focus on detailed study of Si/dielectric layerinterface using unconventional materials (SrO, TiN) with the aim to enable epitaxial growth of buffer layersnecessary for realization of uncooled microbolometers on the base of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 films working and atfrequencies in THz range. Beside the Bi4Ti3O12 studied so far different types of other buffer layers will be testedin order to develop new types of bolometers. We continue in study of perovskite superconductor S/ferromagnet Fand S/F/S structures with the aim to resolve the phenomenom of S/F thin films interaction (proximity effect). Theimplementation of pi-type Josephson junction in digital and quantum circuits may solve some problems of superconducting qubits.

Annotation:	Gallium Nitride (GaN) and related compounds commonly referred as III-N have significantly more flexible energy gap, higher breakdown electric field intensity, a large spontaneous polarization, high thermal and radiation resistance, but also the high mobility of electrons. Therefore there is an effort to develop III-N semiconductor devices, mainly HFETs, which have the potential to gradually replace Si, Si/SiGe, GaAs and InP devices in microwave and power applications, switches, switching amplifiers, logic circuits and mixed-signal electronics. Consequently, in this manner we aspire to develop HFETs with InN channel for ultra-fast information transfer, advanced GaN-based transistor switches for energy conversion, technology of GaN-based fast mixed-signal electronics, and GaN-based UV sensors for space applications.

Annotation:	The essence of the project is to prepare and optimize the method of preparation of superconducting composite wire (filaments) by the method of magnesium infiltration or diffusion into boron. The main emphasis will be focused on the simplicity of preparation (without the diffusion barrier), the availability and suitability of the sheath materials and their electro-mechanical properties. The properties of the MgB2 superconducting core will be controlled by technological preparation, annealing conditions, and possible doping. Selection of suitable materials and technological processes allows monitoring of effects on micro-structure, mechanical properties and superconductive properties: critical current density at temperatures in the range of 4.2 – 20 K, critical temperature, connectivity or losses in alternating magnetic field. The role of the project will be also to examine the possibility of creating superconducting links.

Annotation:	The project is aimed at preparation of thin film structures for energy applications. We will focus on preparationand study of properties of transparent conducting electrodes for organic photovoltaic cells and organic lightemitting diodes as well as on encapsulation of these devices in the first part. We will concentrate also onpreparation and study of properties metal-insulator-semiconductor structures suitable as photoanodes for watersplitting under sun light. The next part of the project will be devoted to study of thin film electrodes for energystorage in batteries and ton preparation of structures for supercapacitors. MAPKO – Magnetic cloaks from superconductor/ferromagnet composites

Annotation:	Realization of a magnetic cloak allowing to hide objects from being observed by a magnetic detector enables the experimental study of several fundamental problems of electromagnetism as well as the searching for innovative solutions of practical problems of magnetic field shielding and shaping. Main aim of the project is the development of methods for design and realization of magnetic cloaks that would provide the possibility to investigate these topics. Basic property we will pursue is the magnetic invisibility when a detector placed outside the cloak will not notice the cloak itself nor a “magnetic cargo” it would contain. Theoretical predictions for reaching perfect invisibility assume unrealistic properties of the used materials and work with ideal and simple shapes without any limitation of dimensions. That is why an important part of the project will be the search and testing of new numerical modelling methods able to include these substantial aspects of real objects. With help of these novel methods we plan to demonstrate the 99% perfection in magnetic invisibility at frequencies from DC to 1000 Hz. Our research could help to reach the following goals: a) Creation of space for experiments in biology shielding the Earth magnetic field as well as that produced in urban environment. Room temperature cylindrical space with at least 50 mm diameter and 150 mm height should allow easy sample exchange and manipulation. b) Design and manufacturing of the cloak for magnetic fields in the 0.1 T range with the volume exceeding 1000 cm3 for the purpose of protecting a sensitive electronic circuitry or e.g. formation of working space for DC arc welding in vicinity of electrical machines generating the stray field at this level. c) Investigation of force exerted on the cloak by a non-uniform magnetic field, in particular the possibility of a magnetic propulsion with help of controlling the magnetic moment of the superconductor/ferromagnet composite.

Annotation:	Two-dimensional (2D) materials and nanoparticles are a very hot topic. Project proposal builds on our knowledgegathered so far and it is focused on fabrication of 2D materials and nanoparticles (using ionic liquids ILs) and thecombination of three materials. The aim of the project is the fabrication of experimental materials and devices forsensors. Concerning 2D materials, we will focus on the optimization of the growth parameters of thin films ofselected materials. In field of nanoparticles, we will continue to prepare facetted metallic and carbonnanoparticles. Facetted ones will be used for the decoration of thin film 2D materials influencing thus the electricaltransport within the film, which is applicable e. g. in gas sensors. Carbon nanoparticles are fluorescent whichimplies their suitability for the use in fluorescence microscopy. The ionic liquids will be used both for preparationof nanoparticles in vacuum and also for formation of EDL gate to control the electrical transport in 2D materials.

Annotation:	The project is oriented towards physical problems of III-V and III-N semiconductors. Many problems with these semiconductors are not solved yet or we have not their technological solution. Among these questions we may name in first the problems connected with the physics and chemistry of an interface between a semiconductor and a dielectric, solving of which is crucial for quality of this interface. The density of interface states of the prepared samples and structures depends directly on the solution of these problems and a possible presence of Fermi level pinning at the semiconductor surface, too. By III-V MISFET structures we want to study frequency dependence of capacitance curves. There are theories that in accumulation a dispersion of the capacitance is caused by a low density of states at the bottom of the conduction band and that the capacitance increase in inversion is connected with the states in the middle of the gap. We shall try to verify these theories or maybe modify them on the basis of the obtained results.

Annotation:	The project aims to investigate the mutual magnetic interaction between superconducting and ferromagneticlayers. Theoretical investigation will rely on numerical models based on the Finite Element Method and theMinimum Electro-Magnetic Entropy Production method. The project will greatly improve the capabilities of thenumerical methods, enabling accurate modelling of real geometries.Experimental investigation is based on characterization of the individual superconducting and ferromagneticlayers and on characterization of simple compound structures, with emphasis on conditions of AC field.Commercially available superconducting tapes will mainly be used as the superconducting elements andcomposites containing ferrite powder will mainly be used as ferromagnetic elements.Using the developed numerical models, the project will analyze and optimize motors with superconductingwindings, as well as design and construct improved magnetic cloaks for shielding AC field.

Annotation:	This project is focused on the preparation of advanced nanowires and nanocones prepared by MOVPEtechnology. The main goal of the project is to study the growth and properties of GaP and GaN based nanowiresprepared by vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) technique. In addition we will concentrate our efforts on improvements andenhancement of the most recent experience obtained within previous projects. Annotation:	The proposed project deals with the effect of low energy electron irradiation of YBCO microstrips with the aim to fabricate channels for easy vortex motion. Detailed analyses will be focused on the subtle balance of many processes involving kinetic (kick-off) process, thermal activation of oxygen as well as ordering of Cu-O chains by incident electrons. The study of these phenomena together with the effect on introducing of artificial pinning in the illuminated channels, having influence on the dynamics of the vortices in the channel, lead to the contribution to basic reserach and also to the realization of functional model structure for the application in superconducting electronics.

Annotation:	Surfaces of III-V semiconductors exhibit large densisties of surface states that limit the use of the semicondutorsin electronics. Native oxides on III-V surfaces do not match the qualiy of oxides on the surface of silicon. Thesurface states have been studied and manipulated by many researchers with the aim to eliminate their infuence.Our aim is to find out how technology is used to eliminate or passivate the states. We intend to useheterostrucutres whose surface will be manipulated to allow for the preparation of high quality MOSHFETs.Manipulation with surface states leads to new types of device. It will thus be possible to integrate various types oftransistor on a single wafer. Annotation:	In this project we will focus on the numerical and experimental study of skyrmions in ferromagnetic nanoobjects. The skyrmions were found in structures with multilayer configuration and the confinement due to geometry can increase stability of the skyrmion significantly. Thus nanoobject structures can lead to room temperature stable, reconfigurable magnetic elements. Still a control and experimental investigation of such structures is chalenge. We will concentrate on the facilitation of generation and develop methods for identification and characterization of the skyrmion states. The study will pave the way towards the implementation of skyrmion in magnetic devices based on the patterned nano-objects (single or arrays).
