Slovakia has officially opened its own Chip Competence Centre (SK CCC), and the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Academy of Sciences is one of its founding members. The ceremonial opening took place on Friday at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Slovak University of Technology (FEI STU) in Bratislava, with the participation of Ján Hrinka, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth, and Vladimír Šimoňák, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy. The Slovak Academy of Sciences was represented by Milan Ťapajna from the Institute of Electrical Engineering SAS, v.v.i., who is also a co-founding member of SK CCC. Alongside FEI STU and the Institute of Electrical Engineering SAS, the Centre for Scientific and Technical Information of the Slovak Republic is also part of the consortium.
The main goal of the project is to build a competitive ecosystem for the Slovak semiconductor industry, with a focus on advanced chip packaging technologies and power modules. As stated by Michal Mičjan, Director of SK CCC, the centre will provide professional outreach, support education, foster business development, and offer access to European infrastructure for companies, research organisations, and universities.
The establishment of the centre represents a significant opportunity to expand research and innovation in new semiconductor technologies for power electronics, to educate a new generation of specialists, and to strengthen technology transfer. Thanks to ongoing cooperation with Taiwan’s ITRI, the centre already operates new infrastructure for reliability testing of power modules. This provides unique opportunities for training experts tailored to the needs of the Slovak semiconductor industry, while also expanding collaboration with industrial partners.
We wish the newly established competence centre every success as it becomes a place where people, ideas, and technologies come together to shape an intelligent and sustainable future for Slovakia.
