Basic duties

  • If you need accommodation in SAS dorm in Devínska Nová Ves, you can submit a request to Ms Eva Stranovská
  • Fill out the application for an email account. After it is signed by the director, submit it to Mr. Martin Grujbár.
  • Enrollment for the first year takes place at the Faculty, not at our Institute. The Faculty will send an invitation.
  • You need to create a study plan – together with your supervisor, you will fill out the form in the faculty’s information system (AIS) online:  is.stuba.sk  (FEI STU) and ais.uniba.sk (FMFI UK)
  • You must take exams in the required subjects. The examiner records the exams in the AIS
  • According to the current accreditation, the PhD program lasts 3 years at FEI STU and 4 years at FMFI UK. At FMFI UK, extensions are possible by temporarily interrupting studies (application). Interruptions can occur multiple times, but the total duration must not exceed 2 years. For FEI STU students, extensions do not require an official interruption of studies, nor is it currently necessary to request an extended study duration. It is enough for your supervisor to select the option “continue studies” in the information system (AIS) at the end of the semester. Following this, Ms. Danka Kurucová from the Doctoral Studies Office at FEI STU will prompt you to pay the fee for the extended study duration. You must also request an extension of your employment contract from the director of the Institute (application).
  • You must participate in the Journal Reading seminar. PhD students will prepare a presentation on an article that they have thoroughly studied for this seminar. The article must present new and high-quality research on a topic that will interest everyone or at least the majority. This will help you practice your English, critical reading of academic literature, and presenting skills and earn credits for your studies.
  • It is your responsibility to collaborate on research (that’s why you are here). For this collaboration, you can earn credits that count towards your studies.
  • At the end of the academic year (usually in June), you need to prepare an evaluation of your progress as a PhD student. This will be done by your supervisor, but it is a good idea to prepare an overview of the credits you’ve earned in advance. Afterward, submit the evaluation to the scientific secretary. Every year, you will also present your progress to the Scientific Council. The presentation typically lasts 15 minutes (10 minutes for the presentation itself and 5 minutes for the discussion).
  • As part of your responsibilities, you are required to publish at least one article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal as the first author and at least one additional article as a co-author. The better the results you achieve, the easier it will be for you to apply for scholarships after completing your PhD studies, such as from the Štefan Schwarz Support Fund.
  • It is also definitely worthwhile to keep an eye on the current calls for doctoral project submissions under DoktoGrant. You can apply for this grant annually, with the opportunity to receive up to €3000 per year for your research, which you can use for purchasing materials, attending conferences, and other related activities.
